Old Fashioned Tea Cakes

Here's a wonderful recipe passed down to me by my great grandmother. They are delicious and really quite easy to make. But be warned, plan for an entire day of baking when you try this one out, because I swear the dough just keeps growing!

Old Fashioned Tea Cakes

2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup crisco
1/2 cup butter (NOT MARGARINE)
1 teaspoon vanilla flavor
1/2 cup milk
pinch of salt
3-5 cups all purpose flour
3 level teaspoons baking powder

NOTE: If you choose to use self-rising flour please leave out the baking powder & salt. Self-rising will work, but it's just not the same! Trust me!

Cream sugar, butter & crisco. Add eggs and vanilla & mix well. In separate bowl mix flour, salt & baking powder. Add 3 cups flour to sugar and egg mixture. Add enough of the flour mixture to stiffen dough enough for rolling. Roll dough to about 1/8 inch thick and cut with cookie cutter of your choice. Place on lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 375 degrees approximately 12 minutes or until golden brown.

Contributor's Note

This is not a really sweet cookie, but it is delicious!
