Orphaned Pot Bellied Piglet
Several years ago our beloved Blue Heeler, Roxie, had just given birth to a litter of pups. The very next day one of our pot bellied pigs gave birth to her first litter of piglets. For some reason the sow decided that she didn't want one of her piglets and me being the sucker that I am just couldn't sit still and watch it die. So I took the little piglet to the house to try and raise her. I immediately got on the internet and read everything I could find on taking care of an orphaned piglet. It didn't seem to hard, but the one thing that kept bothering me, is that with any animal it is very important during the first couple of days for them to nurse their mother in order to get the benefits of the colostrum or "first milk". Now I needed to find somewhere quick that sold an immitation colostrum. Enter Roxie, the new mom! Roxie seemed to sense that something was wrong. She kept "listening" to the little piglets squeals and trying to get to it. That sort of bothered us all at first, because Blue Heelers, while being wonderful pets, are bred to be "stock" dogs, and Roxie was no exception to that. Finally Roxie started to whimper, and the little piglet (by now named Petunia) started trying to get to her. So, we took a chance and let them get together. Best decision we ever made! Roxie sniffed Petunia, and Petunia sniffed Roxie. Next thing we knew, Petunia "latched on" and now we didn't need to find colostrum! Roxie provided just what we needed! |
