Photo Memory Quilts
I've been sewing for more years than I sometimes like to think about. Several years ago I was having a hard time trying to figure out what in the world we were going to give my mother-in-law for Mother's Day. My mother-in-law is one of those people who loves photographs. She has them all over her walls, in drawers, and in boxes! She has pictures that nobody even knows who are! Since I have always been kind of crafty, I always try to make gifts for the family, but that year I was at a loss as what to make. UNTIL...the Saturday before Mother's Day that year, I woke up with what was probably the best idea I've ever had, or ever will have! I would make her a Photo Memory Quilt! Wallhanging size of course, I didn't have time for anything bigger. That first one still hangs over her bed even though I have since made her a much bigger, MUCH better one. For that one, I ran to WalMart and purchased a pack of iron on transfer paper and went home and attacked my computer. I printed out lots of pictures on that special paper and then cut them apart and ironed them onto a large piece of fabric. Then I took another piece of fabric for the backing and added a layer of quilt batting and machine quilted around each picture. She was happier over that thing than anything I can ever remember giving her. But I wasn't. I knew there had to be a better way! I had all sorts of people asking me to make them one, but I wouldn't make anymore for people until I came up with something better. I spent days and days researching the internet, books, magazines and anything else that might help. I finally found information that told me how to take regular cotton fabric, and then either using freezer paper or card stock, run it through the printer. There was another step after you printed it, you soaked it in a special solution to make it colorfast. It worked pretty well, and the photos were much "softer" than the iron-on transfers. But I had so many people asking for them, that once again I figured there had to be a better way. Thankfully I found a wonderful product from June Tailor. She distributes these wonderful sheets that are ready to go straight into the printer and all you have to do to them after you print the photos, is to heat set it with your iron, then rinse in cold water and let dry. Yes, they are a little pricey, but they have been a blessing to me! Sometimes when things are a little slow, (or I've let myself run out of the ready-made ones) I'll still cut my fabric to fit a sheet of cardstock and then make my own printer sheets, but thankfully things don't get that slow to often. Now days I make these photo memory quilts for graduation, weddings, anniverary, in memory of, and of course Mother's Day. They are a wonderful way to show off photos of important events or people in your life. I'd be honored if you decided to come by any of my sites and take a look at them. I am very proud to be able to create something that means so much to so many people.
